25th Jan 2008: Indus Garden Project (IGP)

It was 20 minutes to 4. 4 boys and I borrowed some tools from the contract workers and off we went to catch a cab to our destination. It wasn't easy to catch a cab at that hour as it was "shift-changeover" time. We had to wait for a good 15 minutes, under the scorching sun, before boarding our cab.

Upon arrival at the Garden, we were utterly shocked at the sight of the patch of land we had laboured on last year! It has been "restored" to its original condition. It's been re-turfed "under the beautiful hands of mother nature", as one of the boys (Frederick or Amadeus) had put it.

Here are some of the points we have learnt from this trip and would like to pre-empt future groups from making the same mistakes we did:

1. Bring along the following items:
  • money (for cab!);
  • drinking water;
  • changkuls & rakes;
  • trash bags;
  • plastic bags
  • gloves;
  • insect repellent;
  • log book;
2. See if it is possible to leave school earlier. This is to beat the peak hour, and save on cab fare. Also, we can do more over at the garden if we are early. Consent forms will have to be given to the boys beforehand. (Ms Koo)

3. To contact Regina to have the existing fence removed. (Ms Koo)

4. Can start to buy seeds of plants to grow at the garden. (Any takers?)

Status of Garden
Just managed to dig out the perimeter to the plot of land.
